Nathalie Yu, Vice President of Carrefour China, told a recent event that, by April, all 210 of its big-box stores will be equipped with facial recognition payment systems from its tech partner Tencent. Scan & Go technology is already a feature of all Carrefour China stores, she said, enabling payment directly via smartphone. Many of these are made using WeChat Pay, which accounts for 30% of all transactions at the retailer. Carrefour is also extensively using WeChat for mobile discounting and brand building, helping it reach consumers that have yet to shop the retailer.
